Case Study: DataXplorer
A single, integrated stack for data-driven storytelling in global health and development
The Challenge
Organisations working in global health and development routinely hold rich, valuable data — results, financials, programmatic indicators — spread across disconnected sources: databases, spreadsheets, dashboards built on different tools, none of them designed to talk to one another. Turning that data into a public-facing story usually means stitching together multiple platforms, each with its own limitations, just to connect a source to a chart to a narrative.
The gap DataXplorer set out to close: a way to manage data, visualise it and tell its story, all within a single integrated environment — built specifically for the kind of transparency and impact communication that global health and development audiences need.
The Platform
DataXplorer consolidates data management into one connected stack, covering the full path from raw data to public narrative:
- Connecting data sources — bringing disparate data — financial, programmatic, results-based — into a single working environment rather than leaving it scattered across separate systems
- Building charts, AI-assisted — turning connected data directly into visualisations, without a separate export-and-rebuild step between the data layer and the chart layer; AI suggests appropriate chart types based on the shape and content of each dataset, speeding up the move from raw numbers to a first workable visual
- Creating interactive data stories — packaging visualisations into narratives designed for non-specialist audiences: donors, boards, the public, media
The platform draws directly on the lineage of large-scale institutional data transparency work in global health, operating in parallel with the Global Fund's own data explorer, data.theglobalfund.org, and carrying forward the same underlying conviction: that data earns trust when it's put directly into people's hands, not filtered through static reports.
Origin
DataXplorer was co-founded in 2022, growing out of nearly two decades of experience building and leading data and communications platforms for global health institutions — most notably the Global Fund's website and its own Data Explorer. Rather than starting from a blank slate, DataXplorer was conceived as the distilled, standalone version of that experience: a reusable stack rather than a bespoke build for a single organisation.
Impact
DataXplorer gives global health and development organisations a faster, more integrated path from raw data to public accountability — reducing the gap between "we have the data" and "the public can see and understand it." Its AI-assisted chart suggestions lower the barrier further still, letting teams without dedicated data visualisation expertise move from a dataset to a credible first chart in a fraction of the time a manual build would take. The platform remains an active, ongoing initiative, continuing to evolve alongside the transparency and communications needs of the sector it serves.
DataXplorer is co-founded and led by John Busch. He advises organisations on digital strategy and data-driven communications, drawing on nearly two decades of building transparency platforms for global health institutions including the Global Fund.
